Get ready to meet Rachelle, the multitasking marvel behind Bell Leotards! As the Operations Assistant and a talented designer, Rachelle combines creativity and precision in her role. In this Q&A, she shares what it’s like to work alongside founder Melanie Bell, her passion for design, and how she keeps the creative sparks flying—both in and out of the studio.
Can you describe a typical day in your role?
I prioritize high-demand tasks, such as designing competition leotards or working on upcoming collections. To prevent burnout, I balance my workload by taking breaks to focus on tasks unrelated to design. This approach helps me stay refreshed and focused when I return to the design board.
What are the key skills required to succeed in your role?
A well-balanced approach to time and creativity is crucial. Don’t get bogged down in a single task at the expense of others. By distributing your attention evenly, you can maintain momentum and avoid creative blocks.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Seeing the leotards in person always amazes me. I can't count how many times I've thought, 'Wow, I did that?' As the designer, you can become so familiar with a piece that you start to lose perspective. But when you see it come to life, it's like seeing it with fresh eyes. Each stage of the design process brings a new feeling, and you fall in love with it all over again.
What’s your favorite part of the design process?
The colorways [on mockups]! Even when I think a design is complete, experimenting with different colors can breathe new life into it and inspire me to explore new directions. Sometimes, it even reveals missing elements I hadn't considered before.
How do you balance creativity with the practical demands of designing leotards?
That’s the best part—they’re kind of morphed! My background in illustration allows me to create patterns with a free-spirited approach. While I always follow design guidelines, I prioritize creativity and freehand all the details.
Where do you find inspiration for new designs?
Mostly Pinterest, but I try not to limit myself to basic shapes and straight lines. Sometimes I build concepts from places, things I like, a character, a painting, and so on. Honestly, as long as you're in the right headspace, anything can be an inspiration.
How do you stay creative and avoid burnout?
On my days off, I focus on my other passions: illustration and painting. I also try to get out as much as possible. It's a great way to recharge and return to leotard design with a fresh perspective. After that, even grass can become an inspiration.
Can you describe a recent design that you’re particularly proud of?
Definitely our summer collection! It's the sweetest because I truly gave my all for that one. I've been designing in my free time ever since my first day on the job, creating anything original that I thought I could submit someday. And Mel approaches her collections differently. The challenge of creating a unique summer collection without relying on typical summer aesthetics really pushed me to my creative limits.
What do you think sets Bell Leotards apart from other brands in the market?
The designs, of course! And the quality is impeccable. We may have different perspectives on leotards, but we're always aligned when it comes to our vision. Mel is a perfectionist, and we don't stop until every detail is flawless. You can see the effort in every leotard we make.
What advice would you give to aspiring designers looking to enter the apparel industry?
The apparel industry is full of possibilities. Don’t be afraid to embrace your wildest ideas. If you have a vision, pursue it! There's always a place for you in this field.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned since joining Bell Leotards?
Don't limit yourself. Your dreams are always within reach—you just need to explore your options.
What’s the most valuable piece of advice Melanie has given you?
Simplicity is key. As an illustrator, I used to believe that complexity was essential, but working with Mel taught me the value of simplicity. When I get lost in the details, she reminds me to start over and keep it simple. It's amazing how the essential elements can sometimes get buried in the clutter—they've always been there!
